Sweet muscadels Ouma and Oupa se Wyn, selling for about R55 each, are ideal winter tipples.
Made by Weltevrede in the Robertson Valley, the wines are a full-sweet blend of red muscadel and muscat, using methods going back generations.
The grapes are from old bush vines in Oupa’s Vineyard. Oupa se Wyn 2007 is a rich dessert wine that will stand up to chocolate, strong cheese, poached pears, biltong and even venison pie. Ouma se Wyn is a white fortified wine, fragranced with honey and citrus. As winemaker Philip
Jonker says, “it reminds me of granny’s sweets drawer”. Serve it on ice as a welcome drink or pair with baked quinces, orange chocolate, koeksisters, melktert or fruit tarts.
